You have become a new parent. You got a baby at your house now. Raising him is now the most demanding job out there. You are anxious about how you will teach him and understand his needs. You don’t know how to communicate with your children and have no preparation for this newly assigned job.

You had planned to become the best parent as you believe that children learn and develop best when they have loving, caring, and positive relationships with their parents. That’s what I encountered when I became a parent. I surfed the whole internet and ended up reading that respectful parenting and a positive parent-children relationship is the best thing that can help children learn about the world.

What is respectful parenting?

Respectful Parenting is based on a collaborative, respectful parent-child relationship, where children and parents work collectively to find answers to daily life challenges. Also, in this sort of Parenting, parents try to comprehend their children’s underlying physical and emotional needs to develop better communication with them.

Does respectful parenting work?

Positive Parenting improves our connection with our kids and makes us more satisfied and confident parents. Respectful Parenting encourages the theory that every kid deserves to be treated with love and respectfully as a separate individual.

This sort of parenting works out both ways; it builds an atmosphere of trust between parents and children. It promotes mentally and physically healthy child development and also assists you in receding behavioral problems in children.

How did I start practicing respectful parenting?

Now we have a basic idea about the term respectful parenting, let us move to how I approach respectful Parenting and implement it in my life.

  • Praise Your Child – I started by complimenting my kids’ habits. Praising your child’s small actions will make them feel proud.
  • Let them express themselves – I gave my child a free hand to do things independently and express his thoughts and opinions to me. It will make them feel confident and strong.
  • Avoid unnecessary criticism – Avoid criticizing remarks over child actions, or comparing a child with another kid will make them feel worthless.

“You can’t teach children to behave better by making them feel worse. When children feel better, they behave better.” -Pam Leo.

  • Understand Your Child Behavior – I tried to comprehend the reasoning behind an act. Indeed, children often misbehave, but there is always a rationale for misbehaving, even if it’s a trivial thing.
  • Listen to your child – Patience is a key in respectful Parenting. Try to communicate and listen to your child, also assess the child’s behavior according to their age.
